The holidays are fast approaching, and with them comes the stress of finding the perfect gift for friends and family. At The Siren's Cove, we don't stress, because rum is a drink meant to be enjoyed at your leisure. That's why we've compiled our comprehensive gift guide for you.
Contents:
Small price, big gesture
These are all rums that won't break the bank. Perfect for small gifts, Secret Santa, or to spread your budget across multiple gifts.
Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
This rum is the absolute top performer in the "Bang For Your Buck" category. Sailor Jerry is a brand named after tattoo artist Norman Collins, aka Sailor Jerry, who was known for his signature colorful "sailor" tattoos. This Spiced Rum is quite unique, combining subtle spices and containing no added sugar. It's incredibly flavorful and perfect for drinking neat or in cocktails. Pair it with a quality ginger ale for a delicious and simple cocktail. Each bottle comes with a little surprise: a sticker on the back of the label features an original Sailor Jerry tattoo design.
Ron Abuelo Añejo
Spanish-style rum is often the go-to for those just starting out in the world of rum, or for those who prefer a sweeter rum. For those looking to give a bottle of this style as a gift but want to keep a tight budget, we recommend this Abuelo Añejo from Panama. For a very low price, you get a flavorful rum bursting with aroma. It's a rum that works equally well neat or in cocktails. Incidentally, Abuelo means grandfather, so if Grandpa enjoys rum, this would be a great gift.
Santiago De Cuba 8
For those who are truly unsure about which style of rum someone enjoys, or whether they prefer it neat or in a cocktail, we have this delicious Santiago de Cuba 8. A true Cuban rum that isn't overly sweet, yet still boasts all the flavors typical of a light rum: wood, vanilla, and soft spiciness with dried fruit. Eight years of tropical aging in French oak gives this rum a beautifully complex aroma and flavor that few other rums in its price range can offer.
Bayou Reserve Rum
Looking for a rum for a lover of bold flavors? Then consider this Bayou Reserve. It's a robust 100% copper pot still molasses rum with a short but intense Solera aging in wet ex-Bourbon barrels from Louisiana. Surprisingly flavorful for a rum in its price range. It's perfect neat in a glass, but also holds its own in more powerful cocktails like an Old Fashioned or Sazerac. Or pair it with Bayou White or Bayou Spiced for a wonderful mix of flavors.
Gosling's Black Seal Rum
This iconic Bermuda brand is best known as the rum you need to make a true Dark 'n Stormy: 5cl Gosling's, a little lime juice, and a strong ginger beer. We also always add a few drops of Angostura bitters .
The name "Black Seal," incidentally, comes from the black wax that was once used to seal the bottles: a black seal. "Seal" also means "sea dog," and that's how the famous logo was born.
Looks are important too
You don't always recognize a good rum by its packaging. We have excellent rums you'd easily pass by, but these rums are not only incredibly delicious, but also feature beautifully decorated packaging that immediately catches the eye.
The Demon's Share
ew brands have such iconic packaging as The Demon's Share Rum. These rums from Panama play on the phenomenon of Angel Share: the portion of the rum that evaporates during aging.
All their bottles and cases are inspired by the various devils who drink the rum. The 6, 9, 12, and 15 all have their own unique packaging.
The Demon's Share 6
This version of The Demon's Share is the first in the range intended for specialty stores. It's a very sweet version that combines flavors of wood, vanilla, caramel, and sugar. The tube is beautifully decorated in the same style as the bottle label. Beautiful, authentic colors contrast beautifully, making it a real eye-catcher. The bottle has the typical shape used for all versions except the 15-year-old version.
The Demon's Share 9: Rodrigo's Reserve Limited Edition
This is a limited edition version, matured for nine years in tropical ex-bourbon barrels. The very present oak notes are complemented by a spiciness, giving it greater complexity. The tube and label are somewhat more understated than the other versions, but they also exude more class, which is, of course, a reference to the limited production run.
The Demon's Share 12
This version has been aged for 12 years in tropical conditions and is therefore less sweet than the 6- and 9-year versions. It has considerably more vanillin and tannin than the others, making it smooth on the nose and powerful on the palate, without burning. It's available in its beautiful embossed tube with lovely inscriptions, or in a special metal box with two beautiful glasses.
In addition to the standard 12-year-old, we now also have a version finished in Chianti barrels. This version is beautifully adorned with references to Dante and his The Divine Comedy. This rum combines the familiar softness of The Demon's Share with a much drier flavor that inherits the subtle tannins of Chianti wine.
The Demon's Share 15
15 years of tropical aging is what gives this rum its flavor, but the most striking feature is the bottle, which is different from the others in their range. This bottle is more of a decanter with slightly upward-facing shoulders, giving the impression of devil's horns. It's a bottle that will definitely stand out in your collection.
La Maison Du Rhum
More understated, yet equally impressive, are the rums from La Maison Du Rhum. Each one is a limited edition of top quality, and the packaging itself provides a wealth of information. For example, you can determine the generation just by looking at the tube. The colors, design, and labeling of the tubes are each specific to a particular vintage, but the same applies to all rums from that year.
Each case contains a decanter, and on each decanter, you'll find a label specifically created for a country. Often, they depict scenes typical of that country, or reminiscent of it. With a few exceptions, these labels remain the same, even across different vintages.
The Outsiders
La Maison Du Rhum has also released a few exceptional Rums under the name Trésors Oubliés. These are bottlings from barrels forgotten in the cellar by certain rum distillers. Some have undergone unique maturations, while others are exclusive due to their age. They all come in a simple black box, but when you open the box, flowers reveal themselves.
These rums are all collectors' items, or potential collectors' items. Many of their bottles are also very competitively priced, allowing you to give a beautiful gift that will be remembered for a very reasonable price.
Planteray
Another brand known for its beautiful packaging is, of course, Planteray, aka Plantation. Planteray rums often feature striking labels and matching boxes. The labels often feature images that reveal the rum's origin. Many bottles come with a net made of palm leaves, which reinforces the tropical vibe. These rums offer a wide variety of flavors and offer something for every rum lover.
We will highlight the most striking ones.
Planteray Cut & Dry
Lovers of tropical flavors will be thrilled with this Cut & Dry. It's a coconut-infused rum from the West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados. A whole coconut is used for each liter of rum. The result is an overwhelming yet natural coconut flavor that, thanks to the rum, also acquires hints of chocolate. This rum will often bring back memories of certain other delicacies. The bottle is richly decorated with information and stories about the rum.
Planteray Mister Fogg
Planteray Mister Fogg is Planteray's unique expression of the concept of Navy Rum. To create this rum, they delved into the history books and made some truly unique choices regarding the blend, aging, and bottling. Planteray is increasingly delving into the history of rum, and this bottle reflects that.
Planteray Barbados PXXO 20th Anniversary
This Planteray is an ode to the skill that Planteray is actually known for: double maturation. This Rum comes from the Stade's Rum Distillery, formerly known as the West Indies Rum Distillery. After a tropical maturation, this Rum moved to France where it was further matured on Ferrand barrels. To complete the picture even more, this XO rum was then finished on Pedro-Ximenez barrels. Hence the PXXO label. It is a very soft, sweet and pleasant Rum that combines the fullness of Barbados with the fruitiness of the double maturation and adds a layer of red fruit and wood.
