Attention me Hearties!
Pusser's Rum is a name directly linked to the rich tradition of Navy Rum. For rum enthusiasts fascinated by the history of the British Navy and the unique flavors of Demerara Rum, Pusser's offers an authentic experience. This brand brings a piece of maritime history to life. In this blog post, we take you through the history of Pusser's, the production process, and, of course, the famous Painkiller cocktail.
The history of Pusser's Rum
Pusser's Rum is inextricably linked to the British Navy. The word "Pusser" is an old British naval term for the purser, the officer responsible for provisioning aboard a ship. For centuries, Navy Rum was an essential part of life at sea. Every day, sailors received a ration of rum, a tradition dating back to the 17th century.
On July 31, 1970, the British Navy stopped issuing rum to its crew, a day known today as Black Tot Day, but the love for this unique rum remained. Pusser's Rum was founded to continue producing the original Navy Rum according to the authentic recipe and traditional methods. The brand uses almost exclusively Guyana Rum, a type of Demerara Rum known for its rich, full flavor and deep, dark color.
The history of Pusser's is therefore not only a story about Rum, but also about maritime traditions and the preservation of a piece of British culture. This makes Pusser's Rum special for anyone interested in the background of Navy Rum.
The production process of Pusser's Rum
Pusser's Rum is produced with respect for traditional methods that have been used for centuries. The Admiralty range is a blend of Guyana rums sourced from the Demerara region. This region is known for its rich sugarcane soil and unique distillation techniques.
The rum is made in the double wooden Port Mourant pot still, resulting in a complex flavor with notes of caramel, vanilla, and spices. After distillation, the rum ages for at least 3 years in heavily charred oak barrels, which contributes to the deep color and character of the rum. The result is a powerful yet balanced rum in a typical English style.
Pusser's offers various variants, including the Blue Label, Pusser's Gunpowder Proof, and Pusser's Select Aged 151.
There are also limited editions, such as Pusser's Coronation Reserve, which was bottled in honor of the accession to the throne of King Charles III.

The Painkiller cocktail and Pusser's Rum
The classic Pusser's Painkiller® originated in the Soggy Dollar Bar, a six-seat bar on a long white sandy beach at White Bay on the island of Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands. There is no jetty, so the usual way to get there is by swimming. Naturally, your dollars get wet, hence the name "Soggy Dollar Bar".
It was owned by an English lady, Daphne Henderson. Boaters, including Pusser's founder Charles Tobias, came from far and wide to taste her version of the Painkiller, with which she had become locally famous. The fact that Tobias had received permission from the Royal Navy Admiralty Board in 1979 to commercialize the rum made him curious about this delicious recipe using Pusser's Rum.
Daphne Henderson and Charles Tobias became good friends, but despite their close friendship, and no matter how hard he tried, she refused to reveal her secret recipe for the cocktail. Two years passed. On a late Sunday afternoon, after a morning spent trying to ease the pain, Tobias somehow managed to get one of her concoctions through the surf and over the railing into his boat, and eventually into his kitchen on Tortola, where he lives. There, he set to work replicating her taste as best he could with his own recipe, which he eventually turned out to be a "4-1-1-1" ratio—four parts pineapple, one part coconut cream, and one part orange juice, topped off with Pusser's Rum to taste.
The following Sunday, Tobias returned to her bar and announced to the regulars present that he had finally unraveled her secret. He made one of his own cocktails and passed it around for comments. Tobias noticed a slight difference but found his mix better, not as sweet as hers, and told her so. The ten regulars around the bar unanimously preferred his version over hers, and the rest is history! Shortly thereafter, Tobias began promoting Pusser's Painkillers, first at the Road Town Pub and subsequently at his restaurants in the West End and on Marina Cay. However, he has always given credit to Daphne Henderson with a mention under her name in Pusser's print media: INSPIRED BY DAPHNE AT THE SOGGY DOLLAR BAR IN WHITE BAY ON JOST VAN DYKE. From this humble beginning, the fame of Pusser's Painkillers has spread not only within the watersports and sailing communities but also to bars, neighborhood pubs, restaurant chains, and some of the best cocktail bars in the world.
